"Travelers. there is no path.
Paths are made for walking."
Antonio Machado
Article by Robin O'Grady for "ALPHABET SOUP

In her travels throughout the world, Ann Rosenbaum has experienced the expensive vistas and subtle nuances of cultures across the globe. Raised in both Germany and England, "Annie" came by her wanderlust naturally. Her mother was a courageous woman who fled East Prussia on one of the last boats to successfully transport refugees out of the country. As a young woman she joined her brothers, Klaus and Chris, and a group of adventurous youths on a trek through Greece, Turkey, Istanbul, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, and Nepal.

During this overland journey she acquired a passion for silver and began designing and selling handcrafted jewelry from native silversmiths.

Upon her return from England, Annie enrolled in a teacher's training course and soon found herself traveling through to Tokyo where she taught English as a second Language. While in Japan, she began studying IKEBANA, and the ancient art of flower design, and pursued her interest in professional photography. Never one to linger long in one place, Annie set her sites on traveling to the United States. In 1979, she arrived in America with her black cat, Barabus, and settled in the French Quarter of New Orleans.

She soon linked up with a group of cooperative Artists and joined the venture as a ceramic artisan creating one-of-a-kind MARDI-GRAS MASKS. Soon afterwards, her sister-in-law, Ingrid Wendt, who was immersed in a new business venture creating a line of handcrafted footwear, approached Annie.

Given Annie's love of travel as well as her appreciation for original artistic creations, it is not surprising that she would be drawn to this unique form of shoe making.

The original shoe design was patterned after footwear discovered during archaeological digs. Carved from soft subtle cowhide the one-piece construction provided an almost weightless glove-like fit.

Annie spent the next eleven years immersed in crafting and marketing the medieval-like moccasins. As the popularity of the shoes grew, so too, did the business. Eventually, Annie established her own company, RENAISSANCE MOCCASINS ©. Today, the company is a thriving cottage industry that provides distinctive footwear for those with an adventurous spirit.
